Daytona Racetrack and Beach

Today we took a drive to Daytona Beach.  Our first stop was the racetrack.  We are fans of Nascar.  We don't watch all the races but do try to keep up with who is winning.  I am a Jimmy Johnson fan and Doug is a Earnhardt Jr. fan.

This is a statue of Bill France founder of Nascar and the builder of Daytona raceway.

Jimmy Johnson's plaque for winning daytona in 2013.  He has small hands and feet.  LOL
Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s plaque.  He has small hands and feet too.  After looking at the inside of a nascar race car I can see why.  You have to be small to get into those cars.
Dale Earnhardt Sr.  I wonder if there are always fresh roses at his statue?
Doug standing in front of the pace car.
                                                               Bill and Anne France.

A cut-away car.  This side looks normal.  The other side has the metal off so you can see the safety features
You can't see how the seat is at such an angle but it drops down so much it looks like their knees would be up in their chest.  lol

I must say it was interesting walking in the stands.  I don't really know how you can see a race sitting in those seats.  The cars are going almost 200mph.  By the time you get your eyes focused, the cars are gone.
Libbie and Doug in the 4th turn area
 Libbie enjoying her imaginary race.
 Doug watching his imaginary race.
Leaving the raceway. Walking on all those winners handprints.
From there we went to the beach.

The water was nice and clean but it sure was cold.  Doug and I walked out in it but didn't last too long.  The day may have been hot but that water was COLD!

The clouds were starting to roll in when we left.  By the time we got back to the RV park it was pouring down.  We are going to need a boat if it doesn't stop raining.  We have been lucky that the rain hasn't stopped us from doing what we wanted to do.  Florida is famous for it's afternoon showers but this is ridiculous!  They are suppose to be light showers that last 30-45 min.  Not 2 hour floods!
All in all it was a good day. We only got lost once and we didn't kill each other.  We are on week 3 of our trip.  So that is a good thing.
Later!

Bulow Plantation RV Resort

Yesterday morning early Mike and Kaitlyn came by the RV to see us before we left.  They were here for a wedding that was at Savannah Fountain.  It was good to see them.  They are both so busy that we don't see them often enough.  Of course they really didn't come to see us, they came to meet Buddy!  Buddy was a hit of course.

After a much needed visit we both were on our way.  They were headed to Pensacola Beach for a much needed vacation and us to Bulow RV Resort.
We arrived before the storms thank goodness.  We even had time to set up and almost go eat supper.  Unfortunately it hit while we were gone.  All we got was very heavy rain.  Buddy wasn't too happy about being left alone in the motorhome while the storm was raging, but at least he didn't eat the window coverings trying to get out. (Our dog Muffie ate all the blinds in our travel trailer years ago when she was alone and a storm blew in.)  I must admit that that rain hitting the roof of an RV can be load at times and I am sure that is scary for a dog.  I like hearing the rain hit the roof.  It's good sleeping weather. But I can't imagine what goes through a dog's mind when all of a sudden it sounds like his head is in a trash can and someone is beating on it.  LOL  Well it isn't' that loud, but to them it is.
The sites are natural, in other words, no concrete pads.  These hook ups were together so we had to park opposite each other.
This is our view out the front window!  This was a plantation years ago and the beauty is still there.
This is to the east of our site.  The grounds are well kept.  Being a Florida campground we see a lot of people wintering here.  So there are some full time folks living here.  I think that is a sign of the times also.
It looks like we might have some more rain this afternoon.  So we are going to head to Daytona Beach this morning.
Speaking of bad weather.  My prayers are with those in Arkansas that lost family members and homes.  The town of Vilonia has been hit so very hard.  They were just recovering from a tornado that destroyed a lot of this community a year or so ago.  The new school was to be dedicated this fall and it is gone again.  This storm traveled through other states and caused loss of life and home.  Keep these people in your thoughts and prayers as they try to recover.
I am truly blessed.

On another note, I was reading some of the blogs that I like to read and was very interested in "square groupers".  Have you ever heard of such.  I hadn't til I read Karen's post this morning.  Her and Al are in the Keys living the good life.  Read her blog and find out about square groupers. LOL

A day at Hilton Head Island

Today we went to Hilton Head Island.  Libbie and I tried to get the boys to stay there a couple of days but they weren't interested.  After looking at the Motor
coach RV resort, I think they wished they had given in to us.
I loved the sites here, I could live here full time!

The hard part would be picking the site.
After leaving the Resort, we went to see the Atlantic Ocean.  My first look at the Atlantic was not very impressive.  The water was so muddy, I was afraid it all was going to look like that.
The beach at Hilton Head was much prettier.  Of course, it isn't the gulf, but it was pretty.  The water was a green blue and clean.  The sand was more gray but it was clean.

Even Buddy liked this beach better than the last.

Libbie taking a picture of Jim and Rusty.  I am so happy that the beach looks better.  Can't wait to see what it looks like at Daytona!
We leave this beautiful place tomorrow.  I recommend this rv park.  It's nothing fancy but it's clean and beautiful.  There is a pool for swimming and a pond for fishing so everyone should be happy.  We head south tomorrow.  The adventure continues!

Old Town Trolley ride!

Today we took the trolley ride around historic Savannah.
We had a very good guide by the name of Diva!  She was very informative and entertaining.
One of the things I loved about Savannah were all the squares or jewels of the city as they are called. These squares are beautiful parks that are placed every 4-5 blocks it seems.  Each neighborhood has ones.
There are squares named after prominent people of the community and commanders and chiefs.  I wish I could remember all the information that I absorbed today.  Unfortunately it sunk too deep into my brain and I can't find it now.
Chippewa Square is the site of the filming of Forest Gump.

Then there is the home from the book and movie, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.
My brain was on overload.
The capitol has a dome on top that is covered in gold!  One of the prominent citizens donated this gold.
There is just too much to see and do to remember it all when you try to do it in one day.  This is our 3rd day downtown and I think I need 3 more.  Have you heard the saying, "keeping up with the Joneses?"  There is a Jones St. and the saying came from the beautiful homes that were built there by some of the more wealthy citizens of the day.
This was just a woman and her grandson that were leaving church.  I wish the picture was better because her hat was "a statement" to say the least!  Diva yelled out the window, "love the hat!"

Some famous architect designed several houses in this neighborhood.  I could only get a picture of this one.  Wish I could remember his name.
Savannah's port is not near as big as Charleston's but it is still a busy port.
There are boats to ride here of all shapes and sizes.
There is even a suspension bridge like in Charleston.  This one looks a lot like the one in Greenville, MS.

We waited to get back on the trolley on River Rd.
This was a bell that was made by the same company that made the liberty bell.  It looks the same but without the crack.
We came back to the RV and after we rested cooked up some steaks for supper. Yum they were good.
Just a pretty Live Oak tree here at the campground..
